Updated 5.55pm with Luxembourg ceremony

Italian journalists held a manifestation in front of the Maltese embassy in Rome and demanded justice a week after Daphne Caruana Galizia's assassination.

Organised by the Italian National Federation of Journalists, the demonstration attracted around 30 journalists to Piazza Nicosia.

Present for the event were Amnesty International, Lazio Journalists and Articolo 21, an organisation which advocates for freedom of speech as outlined in 21st Article of Italy’s constitution.Speaking at the event, the Ambassador of Malta to Italy Vanessa Frazier echoed the Prime Minister’s condemnation of the attack.

Dr Frazier said the gravity of the violence was exacerbated considering Ms Caruana Galizia“was only doing her job as a journalist.”

“Her articles might have irritated some but that does not justify the attack,” she told Italian media.

Meanwhile, a minute's silence was held in the main gallery of the Court of Justice of the European Union to mark the tragedy.

The brief ceremony was attended by around 300 members of staff from among the three institutions present in Luxembourg.

President Koen Lenaerts told the assembled crowd that this cruel assassination was an issue that touched all Europeans and went to the heart of European values, particularly the rule of law, the freedom of speech and the freedom of the press.
