In a training session at the Majjistral Park visitor centre held to mark World Food Day, school staff involved in five local eco-schools taking part in the global We Eat Responsibly project participated in a series of workshops to stimulate discussions, exchange good practices and foster cross-fertilisation of ideas.

The EU-funded project, which involves participants from nine EU countries, has been shedding more light on decisions people take daily related to food and the influence these have on the health of the planet and society.

Since the project began in 2015, 43 eco-schools in Malta have joined the project, and during the training session Nature Trust-FEE Malta presented another five schools with funds for their respective school-community link projects.

Participants also had the opportunity to understand better the targets of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals and how their respective projects are tangible opportunities to work towards these targets.

The highlight of the session was a visit to a local organic farm, where participants tasted some of its produce and learned about the challenges to run such a farm.

The project has been another opportunity for students to learn decision-making skills and become change agents in their respective school communities. One school managed to convince its tuck shop operator to sell only vegetarian food items and another school is holding discussions with the Malta Hotels and Restaurants Association to encourage its members to offer a wider selection of plant-based items on their children’s menus.
