The number of vehicles on the road reached 369,261 at the end of September, an increase of 60,000 compared to five years ago.

A whopping 41 new vehicles were being added every single day to the Maltese roads, according to the National Statistics Office.

The majority of new licences (4,814) were issued to passenger cars, followed by 882 for motorcycles.

The number of motorcycles has actually trebled since the end of 2014, increasing from 1,740 to 5,721 by the end of September 2017.

However, the number of vehicles using alternative energy has not grown as rapidly: there are now 377 electric cars and 788 hybrids, and 1,235 that use only LPG or LPG in combination with petrol or diesel.

Once again, there were more second-hand vehicles licensed (3,793) than new ones (2,721).
