Naxxar Lions bagged their first league win of the season when they came from a goal down to beat St Andrews 3-1 at the Centenary Stadium.

St Andrews came out of the blocks strongly with Joseph Farrugia pushing forward in an attempt to link up with Jacob Walker and Kevaughn Atkinson.

Farrugia forced a great save from Christoph Nicht after the Naxxar goalkeeper had parried his sixth minute free-kick.

The Saints too the lead after eighth minutes.

Kyle Butler, starting in place of Kemmu Jackson, threaded a ball into the pah of Walker who fired into the net from just outside the box.

Marko Glumac's team failed to exploit their superior possession during the first half and were made to pay when Scott Fenwick equalised.

Naxxar shouted ‘goal’ when Ryan Grech delivered an inswinger from a corner which looked to have beaten Matthew Calleja Cremona who managed to get a touch to the ball.

The impression from the media zone was that the ball may have crossed the line but the match officials saw otherwise.

A goalmouth melee ensued and Naxxar were awarded a penalty for a handling infringement. From the spot, Fenwick sent Calleja Cremona the wrong way.

The comeback was complete seven minutes into the second half, following a stunning finish from Yuri de Messias.

The Brazilian's pace outpaced Butler and Ricardo Martin to beat Calleja Cremona with a rising shot.

With St Andrews still shell-shocked, Duane Bonnici was allowed to run unchallenged to the edge of their box only for the winger to shot wastefully into the hands of the goalkeeper.

Naxxar wrapped up the points late  in the match.

The Lions hit St Andrews on the break and Bonnici - after latching onto Bustos’s through ball, slid his shot past Calleja Cremona to ensure Naxxar chalk up their first win of the season.
