Malta national team captain Andre Schembri said he did not celebrate his goal against Italy's Atalanta last night as a sign of respect after the assassination of Daphne Caruana Galizia.

Schembri was seen casually walking away after heading in Appollon's temporary equaliser in the 3-1 defeat in Italy.

In a Facebook post, Schembri said: "A good show against a very strong Atalanta side. Celebrating my goal didn't feel right after what happened in Malta this week."

It was the first time a Maltese player scored in the proper rounds of a UEFA competition.
