Unifaun Theatre is staging the last few performances of Reed Martin’s and Austin Tichenor’s comedy William Shakespeare’s Long Lost First Play (Abridged) at St James Cavalier Theatre, Valletta.
The playwrights have weaved together some famous speeches and plot devices of Shakespeare’s 39 plays to create a fast, funny and fictional 40th play, filled with witty wordplay and vaudevillian variety.
In this strange-yet-familiar narrative, an ancient grudge pits Puck (from A Midsummer’s Night Dream) against Ariel (from The Tempest) and turns Shakespeare’s canon upside-down, creating such strange bedfellows as Hamlet and master motivator Lady Macbeth, Viola and Richard III, King Lear and the Weird Sisters, and Dromio and Juliet.
The play has already toured internationally to rave reviews. The local production is directed by Chris Gatt and stars Nathan Brimmer, Joseph Zammit and James Ryder.
The 90-minute production will be staged from today until Sunday at St James Cavalier, Valletta, at 8pm. For tickets, visit www.kreattivita.org.
