I was grateful to read Anton Borg’s comments (October 6) as I was beginning to imagine mine was just a voice in the wilderness.

I write to explain why the UK will not leave the EU.

Since the last election, which saw Theresa May’s government lose its majority, the number of Labour Party card-carrying members grew to 350,000. Their average age fell from 53 to 42 in just five months. Jeremy Corbyn has pledged to raise this number to one million within a year.

The Conservative Party only has 100,000 paid-up members or activists. Their average age is 72. It lost 50,000 paid-up supporters in four years.

The youth vote Corbyn has already garnered is anti-Brexit. I know the Labour youth wing is extremely effective in communication. The Conservative Party does have a youth wing but that has always been treated with disdain. More a dating society for privileged and wealthy children whose parents ambition is marriage into “polite society”.

I have reservations about Corbyn’s spending plans but we all know promises are easily made in Opposition.

We have seen how a caucus of disloyal Conservative MPs have been plotting and scheming to remove May from office. She is a decent and honourable person who is doing her best but with friends like Boris Johnson at her Cabinet table she is in some peril.

I fear she will be deposed quite shortly and then we shall see the Conservative Party for what it really is. A split down the middle party regarding Brexit. The longer it takes for the party to fracture the better for Labour.

With increasing youth support we may expect to see Labour returned to power early next year. Hence, Brexit will dissipate because of the youth vote.

In Malta, I believe both parties need to invest much more time and effort in fostering the youth vote and incorporate a strong youth wing into their constitutions.

If my analysis of the UK age profile proves accurate, then the party that grows its youth activist constituency most effectively will win future elections. All things being equal. We shall see.
