Toronto FC are just one point away from recording the greatest regular season in Major League Soccer history.

A 1-0 win over arch-rivals Montreal Impact moved them to 68 points, tying the league record for the most points in a campaign set by LA Galaxy in 1998.

With one game left to play, Toronto have the chance to eclipse that record when they visit Atlanta United next Sunday.

The club began the evening by celebrating their first Supporters' Shield win and took the points over the Impact thanks to a 16th-minute goal from Jozy Altidore.

At CenturyLink Field, the Seattle Sounders guaranteed themselves a spot in the play-offs with their 4-0 home victory over Dallas FC.

Goals from Victor Rodriguez, Will Bruin (2) and Lamar Neagle helped the defending MLSCup champions secure a ninth consecutive post-season appearance.

For Dallas, the loss diminished their hopes of earning the final Western Conference play-off place.

Despite a 0-0 draw at Children's Mercy Park, Sporting Kansas City and the Houston Dynamo both clinched places in the MLS Cup play-offs.

Sporting held control for much of the match but could not find a breakthrough, leaving the Dynamo in the play-offs for the first time in four years.

Meanwhile, Nemanja Nikolic cemented his lead over his nearest Golden Boot rivals by scoring a hat-trick for Chicago Fire in their 3-0 victory over the Philadelphia Union.

The Hungarian has scored 24 goals this year, putting him four clear of NYCFC's David Villa and three ahead of the Portland Timbers' Diego Valeri.

Chicago are now hoping for a win over the Houston Dynamo in next Sunday's finale, to put them in second place in the Eastern Conference.

Elsewhere, the Portland Timbers earned a cup play-off spot with a 4-0 win over DC United, LA Galaxy beat Minnesota United 3-0 and New York City FC failed to clinch the number two spot in the Eastern Conference due to a 2-1 defeat by New England Revolution.

There were 1-0 wins for Columbus Crew over Orlando City SC and Colorado Rapids over rivals Real Salt Lake, while the match-up between the Vancouver Whitecaps and San Jose Earthquakes ended 1-1.

It was a goalless draw for the New York Red Bulls in their game against Atlanta United.
