An American dance troupe that wants to “change lives one move at a time” is on tour in Malta and shared its “clean fun” with the public at BirguFest this weekend.

Soul Street Dance is visiting Malta through the US Department of State’s Arts Envoy programme. Arts Envoy shares the best of the US arts community with the world to foster cross-cultural understanding and collaboration, and to demonstrate shared values and aspirations.

Arts professionals – including performing and visual artists, poets, playwrights, theatre and film directors and curators – travel overseas to conduct workshops, give performances and mentor young people.

The programme seeks to connect with people curious about the arts who might not otherwise have the opportunity to engage with American arts professionals.

The US Embassy in Malta is hosting the dance company until October 19. During their visit, Soul Street will give workshops in some schools, having participated in the BirguFest event with Maltese hip-hop artists Street Elements.

The group will also engage with students at the Department of Performing Arts at the University of Malta.

Their tour includes a performance at the Ħal-Far open centre, and in collaboration with local NGOs MOVE and Breaking Limits, Soul Street will deliver a workshop and perform at the Student Hub at Mcast together with Street Elements.

Soul Street Dance recently completed two tours of the Eastern bloc, sharing the joy of dance through workshops and performances with young aspiring dancers from the former Soviet Union.

They are currently in preparation to represent the US in an upcoming tour of Haiti.

Throughout their travels, the dancers model sober, responsible behaviour, along with open hearts and minds and clean fun that allow them to share their expertise with all cultures.
