Women in 18th Century Malta is a new publication which brings together various aspects of women’s lives in 18th century Malta, including the work they did, their involvement in religion and magic as well as  their interaction and encounters with other members of society, their crimes as well as when they themselves fell victims to crime.

All the evidence shows that the attitude of Maltese society towards women as regards their family honour, social and legal status, position in the family and in religious matters was no different from any other South European Catholic country.

The book has been researched and written by Yosanne Vella  who has been researching the subject for the past 30 years.  She has published various papers in different academic journals both locally and abroad.  This book is an attempt to bring an updated version of all this research work into one collection.

Book brings together various aspects of women’s lives

Maltese women were not personally very much directly involved in any great movements or major political events in the 18th century.  They suffered many restrictions and limitations as regards legal and social rights but their contribution to the growth and development of their society should not be overlooked or be undervalued and this book addresses their role in this era.

Women in 18th Century Malta (SKS Publishers) is illustrated with contemporary paintings in private and public collections in Malta, Paris and St Petersburg, some of which are being published for the first time.

The publication will be officially launched during the Malta Book Festival between November 8 and 12 at the Mediterranean Conference Centre, Valletta.
