A 22-year old Albanian man was arraigned today charged with the attempted murder of three police officers.

Appearing in court still wearing a bloodied jacket, Daniel Muka pleaded not guilty to the charges, which also included resisting arrest and causing minor injuries, holding a firearm and cocaine possession.

Mr Muka was one of two people arrested on Thursday night in connection with an armed hold-up at the Diamonds International jewellery shop in Tignè last week, in which two people were injured before the thieves fled.

During his arrest at St George's Bay, Mr Muka allegedly took out a gun and pointed it towards the police officers, unsuccessfully attempting to shoot at them several times.

Two officers were taken to the Floriana health centre where they were certified to be under shock and suffering from slight injuries.

Magistrate Grezzio Mercieca ordered that the man be remanded in custody.

The prosecution was led by inspectors Carlos Cordina and Mark Mercieca.
