A man tried to shoot at police officers last night as soon as they told him he was under arrest.

The police said in a statement this morning that its Rapid Intervention Unit observed two men at St George’s Bay, St Julian’s at 11.30pm yesterday who it suspected were involved in a hold-up from a jewellery shop at Pjazza Tigne in Sliema on October 5, during which two people were injured.

A few days ago the police sought the public’s assistance to locate one of the suspects.

As soon as the men, both Albanians, were informed of their arrest, one took out a gun and pointed it towards the officers attempting to shoot at them several times. He was unsuccessful.

The men, aged 25 and 26, were taken to the police headquarters for investigation.

Two officers were taken to the Floriana health centre where they were certified to be under shock and suffering from slight injuries.

Police investigations are continuing.
