It was 1970 when Mauro Forghieri, engineer and chief designer of Ferrari, decided to launch a new car model on the race track powered by a revolutionary engine – the legendary V12 as opposed to the equally legendary 312B.
It was the first ‘flat’ engine in the history of competitions, originally designed to be in the wing of an airplane. Thus the Ferrari 312B was born, which allowed Jacky Ickx and Clay Regazzoni to win four GPs and to struggle up to the last for the F1 title in 1970.
A great period started for the ‘Prancing Horse’, which lasted at least a decade with 37 triumphs in GPs, four world championships and three world drivers’ championships.
Almost 50 year after the debut of the Ferrary 312B, its golden age is traced in a new documentary through the testimonies of drivers such as Niki Lauda, Jacky Ickx, Gerhard Berger and Damon Hill. It is being released in Malta tomorrow after the premiere was shown in cinemas in Italy this week.
The premiere is taking place at Cinema 16, Eden Cinemas, Valletta, tomorrow at 9.05pm. A range of Ferrari cars will be on display. Duncan Micallef, the FIA European champion, will be making a guest appearance for cinemagoers to get up, close and personal with him, followed by a question-and-answer session.
