David Mercieca, a student from St Paul’s Missionary College, was recently awarded a needs-based scholarship to enrol on the two-year International Baccalaureate diploma offered at the United World College Adriatic in Duino, Italy, that started last month.

United World College (UWC) is a network of 17 colleges spread around the world. While offering the IB diploma, the UWC focuses on cultivating a value-based learning environment grounded upon values that encourage the development of well-rounded alumni.

The UWC educational pedagogy draws its inspiration from a unique, holistic educational movement that began with the vision of Kurt Hahn, whose pioneering work sought to bring young people from differing backgrounds together in understanding through education. UWC’s mission is to make education a force to unite people, nations and cultures for peace and a sustainable future.

The scholarship was awarded upon the recommendation of the UWC Malta national committee, which aims to raise awareness about the UWC movement and select students to attend UWC colleges across the world. The committee also supports and guides future and current UWC students in Malta for their prospective and/or ongoing UWC experience.
