A group of 21 Venture Scouts and an Adult Leaders from the 1st Cospicua Scout Group had a perfect opportunity to live Robert Baden Powell’s dream of an international brotherhood of young people living together in perfect harmony during a camp held in Italy.

The camp – set in the fantastic scenery of the Sud Tirol in the Italian locality of Appiano – was held in conjunction with a group of German Scouts from the Stamm Steve Biko DPSG. The German Scouts hail from Neuenrade in North Rhine Westphalia and the friendship between the two scout groups can be traced back to 1988 when contact was first established between the Neuenrade, Cospicua and Victoria Scout Groups.

The summer camp in the Alps this year was a milestone in the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the foundation of the 1st Cospicua Scout Group. Activities at the camp included a hair-raising and adrenaline-loaded river rafting trip on the Passirio River, an expedition up the mountains and a night spent in a typical chalet, some frolicking on the high ropes in an alpine forest and an excursion on Via Ferrata.

The programme also included cultural visits to the Mountain Museum and a memorable trip to the South Tyrol Archaeology Museum. Of course, the experience would not have been complete without the traditional scout activities such as pioneering, campfires, swimming in the ice-cold lakes, games and good food – all complemented with the great spirit of friendship and camaraderie which only those who have been scouts can truly appreciate and understand.

The camp came to an end with a hearty meal at a typical South Tyrolean restaurant. It was an emotional moment when gifts were exchanged and promises made that true to the spirit of the scout laws and promise, the flame of brotherhood will be kept burning brightly.
