To clarify, some denominations state that it is the fifth commandment, but this is irrelevant. It is the substance of this universally recognised commandment that is important. “Honour (love and respect) your father and your mother.” Although the 10 Commandments were given by God Himself to Moses, their basics form an integral part of all the known religions and are not limited to the Judeo-Christian cultures.

This commandment requires one to honour and respect both parents equally; there is no greater weight given to either the father or the mother. Jesus affirmed the importance of honouring one’s father and mother.

The family is the original cell of social life. Authority, stability and a life of relationships within the family constitute the foundations for freedom, security and fraternity within society. The family is the community in which, from childhood, one can learn moral values, begin to honour God and make good use of freedom. Family life is an initiation of life in society.

In Islam it is stated: “To parents, good treatment.” In Hinduism it is part of the Yama and Niyama. In Buddhism it follows from old traditions and interpretations. In Confucianism it is emphasised that one must honour the father and the elders.

Considering all this, what made the two major parties collude to demean the family unit? What was gained? I feel the new law should be changed to allow options with regard to how parents, i.e. the mother and father, are listed on official documents such as birth certificates.

I am sure that both parties had the best interest in mind. This was not a ‘mistake’ per se but more of a slip or oversight. A better form of wording should be sought that would still provide for gender equality but at the same providing alternative means to each individual according to his values.

The rights of any one group should absolutely never impinge on the rights of other groups.
