I think my favourite part of each fashion week is when I make myself a hot, strong mug of sugary tea, throw on my fluffiest dressing gown and sit cross-legged in front of my laptop, waiting to see all the photos and videos from my favourite shows.

This happy process doesn’t only give me the opportunity to see what my favourite designers have been up to, but like looking into a crystal ball, it also shows me what I can expect to see in shops in six months’ time.

The following are a few of the trends that took the September 2017 New York Fashion Week by storm:

If you’re not feeling adventurous enough to wear the short cow-print dress, why not get yourself some fancy cowboy boots?

Nylon everything: With the 1990s revival we’ve been enjoying for the past two years or so, it was only a matter of time before we were reaching for the black, nylon Prada backpacks which were so synonymous with the Carolyn Bessette Kennedy era. However, inevitably, the fashion world has gone the extra step and brought back those shiny, nylon coats and trousers that took so much stress out of packing because it really didn’t matter how you folded them. The colour palette has pretty much remained the same too, which means that if you listened to your mother and didn’t throw your stuff out, there’s a new life in store for your now vintage lovelies.

Brown is back: There was a time when everyone coveted a brown skirt (usually in leather) to match their brown lipstick. Rachel from Friends had one (which meant that every girl under the age of 20 had one too) and because there were different lengths to choose from, older women hopped on that bandwagon too. Sadly, post 2005, many of these brown items were left to languish on shelves; however, thanks to cool brands like Moschino and Emilio Pucci taking up the brown mantle once again, we can all enjoy dressing up like dry leaves to our heart’s content.

Glam Western: I know that this is probably the first and last time you will ever see the words ‘glam’ and ‘western’ grouped together, but this is exactly what this fashion week’s catwalks were awash with. Last seen on Madonna after the release of her ‘Music’ album in 2000, I wasn’t really expecting silk cowboy shirts to make a comeback till I did the maths and realised that 17 years had passed and my youngest sister who is actually not young anymore didn’t have any recollection of a pregnant Madonna in a sparkly, cream cowboy hat and white fur coat. If you’re not feeling adventurous enough to wear the short cow-print dress that Balmain proffered, why not get yourself some fancy cowboy boots?
