The Malta College of Arts, Science and Technology (Mcast) is offering various environmental engineering courses that offer students opportunities to develop and nurture new knowledge and skills in the environmental sector.

The Mcast Advanced Diploma in Environmental Sustainability (MQF level 4) opens up possibilities for employment as an environmental technologist or analyst. Students will learn environmental monitoring and energy management concepts, understand current legislation and best practices in the management of waste and pollution and achieving efficiency in resource utilisation. The course also involves a period of work-related experience in the environmental sector. After having completed the diploma students can further their qualifications at Mcast by reading for the Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Environmental Engineering (MQF level 6).

The Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Environmental Engineering (MQF level 6) offers students the opportunity to further their training in engineering in the dynamic and changing landscape of today’s environmental challenges. The course of studies includes practical investigations, work placements, projects, lectures, tutorials, supported and enhanced with a dissertation. At the end of the programme, students will be able to carry out water, energy, and environmental audits and basic environmental impact assessments (EIAs). Graduates will also gain scientific and critical problem-solving skills necessary in the management of ecological and technical challenges through the implementation of monitoring, logging, data management and interpretation of various environmental parameters.

The environmental sector will continue to expand in future, offering a diverse range of employment opportunities

A degree in environmental engineering opens numerous professional opportunities in planning, construction, water and energy management, environmental protection and operation of environmentally technological facilities, in research and teaching, in environmental organisations, in environmental consultancy, as well as freelancing.

There is a growing need for environmental engineers who have been trained to deal with technical and ecological challenges, understand the technologies for waste management, pollution control, biodiversity conservation and resources management and associated business opportunities.

It is predicted that the environmental sector will continue to expand in future, offering a diverse range of employment opportunities. The growing importance of environmental legislation and policies, at national, European and international levels, has fostered the need for more investment in this sector, and for graduates with vocational training that allows them to implement these changes.

During the past few years Mcast’s Institute for Applied Sciences has invested in state-of-the-art laboratories and monitoring equipment and introduced more applied curricula that enable students to learn during apprentices and work placements, and conduct research for sustainable development.

Today, the institute is leading change in environmental science and engineering education and related research nationally. It collaborates with several reputable international scientific partners, and has a growing team of researchers that work with the industry and policymakers to offer new opportunities to students and more applied solutions for society.
