The Energy Research Group of the Institute of Engineering and Transport at the Malta College of Arts, Science and Technology (Mcast) is organising an Energy Day Conference on September 7 and hosting the International Summit on Stability of Organic and Perovskites Solar Cells from October 18 to 20. World-class scholars and leading researchers are expected to attend the events. For enquiries or to register for either of the events, visit the websites below.
The group, which is led by Brian Azzopardi, is conducting research on efficient buildings, power systems, renewables, transportation device fabrication and on-site testing, energy economics and policy. It specialises in applied research techniques including optimisation, decision making and lifecycle analysis.
The group recently hosted for three months a visit by Ph.D candidate Francisco de Paula García López from the University of Seville, Spain. The visit formed part of the 3DMGrid project: Design, Development and Demonstration of a Future-Proof Active Smart Micro Grid System, which is partly funded by the Malta Council for Science and Technology (MCST) through the Eranetmed initiative. The project aims to set up an active and intelligent microgrid by 2019, a pioneering development in Malta.
Solar energy is one of the pillars of this active microgrid. The data collected and the simulations performed during Mr López’s visit gave a first indication of the scenarios of microgrid development at Mcast’s Paola campus. These scenarios included imports, exports, islanding and possible voltage control using existing photovoltaic systems.
