In a booming economy as Malta is experiencing at the moment, Prime Minister Joseph Muscat is rightly focused on encouraging senior citizens to keep working beyond retirement age.

What irks me is that while those employed in the public sector can automatically carry on working beyond retirement age, at parastatal companies, which are government entities, it is in the discretion of a body entrusted with such a task to decide whether an employee can do so or not.

Surely, those who have been working for the previous 20 years or so with the same employer should, in recognition of their loyalty, if anything, have an automatic entitlement to an extra two years of work.

I appeal to the Prime Minister to implement such measures with urgency. Postponing a decision will not help those who are due to retire. Such uncertainty is causing unnecessary stress.
