Malta Freeport is to build a garden and recreational facility on the Birzebbuġa promenade as part of its commitment towards the community, Tourism Minister Konrad Mizzi said.

The initiative will see the development of an abandoned stretch of land covering 5,000 square metres along the Birzebbuġa promenade into a garden with water features.

The project by the company was presented to Projects Plus, which falls under the aegis of the Tourism Ministry.

Dr Mizzi spoke at a signing ceremony this afternoon during which the operating license for Malta Freeport Terminals was extended for another 30 years.

The extension was possible after the company fulfilled the 2008 agreement conditions that included an increase in the number of containers handled at the port and benchmarks for investment.

Malta Freeport Terminals is the fastest growing independent transhipment terminal in the Mediterranean.

Dr Mizzi said the company is working to improve relations with the community and there were ongoing talks with the Birzebbuga mayor in this respect.

Birzebbuġa residents have in the past complained about noise from the freeport and takeup of land close to the beach.
