Edward Caruana Galizia’s ‘Please choose wisely’ (Talking Point, August 8) is very good advice to the Nationalist Party members who shall be voting to elect their new leader.
His mistake or, rather, error in this article is that religion has nothing to do with politics. In his opinion, politicians who are Catholic must forget they are Catholic when they are dealing with politics. This surely is absurd.
Absurd logic is also mainly the theme of a book, recently published by Fr Mark Montebello entitled In-nies min jgħidu li jien?
The author, a well-known philosopher, maintains that (Catholic) religion has created a feature where people in a high position treat their subordinates as if they were infants or mentally deficient and not as their equals. He concludes that if there were no religion, everyone would be lord of oneself, free to enjoy one’s thoughts, one’s life and ambitions.
When choosing their new leader, PN members must keep in mind that the Catholic religion is the main religion in this country. Religion is a way of living in private and in public. Religion does not subordinate people to their superiors, it ensures the rule of law, it promotes love and justice to every human being.
