Greenpak is running a campaign called ‘Batree’ until the end of September to collect used batteries at promotional stands at various supermarkets in exchange for gifts for children and discount vouchers on new Duracell batteries.

“We are trying to encourage and make it as easy as possible for consumers to properly dispose of their old batteries,” said Daniel Tabone, operations manager at Greenpak Coop Society.

The campaign is being carried out at Scotts Supermarkets in Attard, Birkirkara, Burmarrad, Naxxar, Santa Luċija, Sliema, St Julian’s and Żabbar; Lasco Supermarket in Żejtun; Pavi and Pama supermarkets in Qormi and Mosta; Chain supermarkets in Żabbar and Fgura; Green’s Supermarket in Swieqi; Tower Supermarket in Sliema; Valyou Supermarket in Naxxar; and Smart Supermarket in Birkirkara.

Mr Tabone said that over two million batteries are imported in Malta each year. “Used batteries should not be disposed of in black bags as these end in the landfills and harm the environment.” Depositing used batteries in specifically designated Batree bins will ensure they are properly recycled.

Batree battery recycling bins can also be found in local councils, schools and stationeries.
