Marlene Farrugia has announced she will be resigning as leader of the Partit Demokratiku, just two months after carrying the new party into parliament. 

In a Facebook post, Dr Farrugia said that she would not be contesting the party leadership or any other post during the PD's upcoming Annual General Meeting, scheduled for October. 

Dr Farrugia said she had to "focus on other challenges in my life" but would "continue to contribute to PD." 

"I believe other capable people should have the space and opportunity to help this party achieve what the people need to reacquire faith in Maltese politics," she added. 

Dr Farrugia gave no indication as to whether she would also be giving up her parliamentary seat. 

The firebrand MP was elected together with her husband Godfrey on the PD ticket last June and became the first MP from a third political party to make it into parliament in more than half a century.

She included the announcement of her imminent departure at the end of a Facebook post promoting a party gathering at her residence in Qrendi this evening at 8pm. 

Those who were keen to contest PD posts or vote for party leaders during the PD's AGM had to have attended "at least two" of the three get-togethers planned between now and then, she said.
