The wife of deposed prime minister Nawaz Sharif is to run for a seat in parliament, a lawmaker from Pakistan's ruling party said.

Kulsoom Nawaz will contest the seat that was left vacant after her husband was disqualified from office by the country's Supreme Court for concealing assets.

Asif Kirmani said Ms Nawaz submitted her nomination on Friday in the city of Lahore. The election will take place next month.

Lawmaker Shahid Khaqan Abbasi replaced the three-time prime minister Sharif after the Supreme Court's July 28 ruling.

Sharif is currently holding rallies across Punjab, where the city of Lahore - the Sharif family's home town - is the provincial capital. His final rally is expected some time this weekend in Lahore.

He has called the rallies a "democracy caravan".
