The first construction-related call for tender related to the Marsa junction upgrade has been issued.

The call for tender seeks applicants for works to upgrade part of Triq Aldo Moro and Triq il-Gvern Lokali, as "phase of the construction of a multi-level interchange at Nodes EA20a and EA21" in Marsa.

It marks "price" as the key criteria by which the tender will be adjudicated, though it notes that it will not be the only factor at play when adjudicating the tender.

According to the call for tender, this section of the large-scale project is expected to take seven months to complete. Interested applicants have until September 19 to apply.

The entire Marsa junction project includes the building of a three-lane junction, the shifting of existing carriageways, demolition of factories, the creation of a park-and-ride facility and landscaping of various sections of the 25,000 square metre area impacted.

Its first phase involved demolition works to create space for the various infrastructural upgrades involved as part of the project. The call for tender issued today forms part of the project's second phase. Phase three will be the most substantial part of the project and will involve the building of new junctions.

Dr Borg has previously said that works on the large-scale project are expected to start at around the turn of the year.

In a Facebook post announcing the call for tender, Dr Borg said he was confident that everyone involved in the project would "rise to the occasion" and work together to ensure the project, which is expected to take three years to complete, would be finished on time and on budget.
