A cyclist recovering from multiple shoulder fractures and friction burns in various parts of the body due to an inconsiderate driver has made a plea on Facebook for drivers to consider the vulnerability of others sharing the road.

Stanley J. Cardona wrote that he went for a bicycle ride on Wednesday and due to an inconsiderate person in a car behind him, hooting impatiently in a narrow stretch of a major road and also while overtaking him, he ended up skidding and halting in the middle of the road while cycling at 43km/ trying to move out of the way as fast as he could.

The car driver that caused this accident failed to stop.

Saying that he did not wish to pass judgements or comments, Mr Cardona said the aim behind his post was to urge as many people as possible to reflect before reacting.

“Please consider the vulnerability of others sharing the same road - walkers, joggers, runners, cyclists, bikers and even fellow cars.”

He said it was not always possible for bicycles to cycle by the side of the road. Many road conditions required that cyclists cycled further out to the middle of the road.

“Think before you react how a moment of frustration can impact other people's lives. I am a husband and a father of two young children. I consider myself extremely lucky this time round...

“I arguably understand that everyone is in a hurry whenever travelling on the roads... but think how a moment's wrong and impatient action can change another person's life. Due to a moment's impatience, if lucky, casualties will have to endure long weeks of pain and suffering before recovering from an accident. If lucky.”

Mr Cardona thanked all those who stopped to help him after the accident, as well as his family and staff at the Mosta and Birkirkara health centres.
