A construction site in Mosta’s taż-Żokrija area is proving to be a headache for the local council as it struggles to remove the waste generated there.

A spokeswoman for the council told the Times of Malta that as the necessary measures were not being taken to ensure that construction debris and other dust did not spread, the area around Triq Patri Ġużé Delia is “a complete mess”.

As some of the apartments have been completed and people are moving in, the area is also full of the rubbish dumped by those already living there.

“We’ve had to remove used sofas and boxes that housed air-conditioning units. The area is a complete mess. To make matters worse, there is dust everywhere, because the necessary measures are not being taken,” the spokeswoman said.

The council, she explained, had sent five truck to collect rubbish from the area, with the mayor visiting the area with wardens.

Despite this, rubbish and construction waste was still being dumped all over the area. While the council was taking all the necessary action, the spokeswoman pointed out that this had its limitations and it could not carry out all enforcement.

“Take the problems at the construction site, for instance. There’s not much that can be done from our end, and it is up to the authorities concerned to take action. All we can do is file reports, which we do as soon as we receive them,” she said.

On whether the residents in the area had complained about the matter, the council spokeswoman pointed out that while they would often call at the council with information, they were reluctant to file formal complaints.

“For some reason, most people do not speak up, and unless they come forward, our hands are tied.

“Our resources are limited, and so they need to go to the authorities involved as well to file complaints,” she explained, urging those who witness any problems to come forward.
