The Gozo College organised a students’ council forum, having as its theme Aspiring Leaders, Inspiring Ideas.

The forum, the first of its kind, was the brainchild of Denise Mifsud, the Gozo College principal who, together with the College Primary PSCD teachers and 77 students representing the 11 students’ councils, met to share good practices and brainstorm new ideas.

This innovative concept provided an ideal setting where students could showcase their activities organised during the past scholastic year. Following a video clip of 44 activities, they took part in a public speaking exercise where the students outlined the main aspects of their activities.

They were later divided into groups to come out with ideas with regards to learning, school environment, recreational facilities and life in general at school.

The most prominent issues put forward were more outdoor educational activities, including camping trips, swimming lessons, athletics, tournaments, cycling, kayaking and hikes, increased exposure to hands-on subjects such as computing, woodwork, gardening, cookery and entrepreneurial skills and additional informal school-based activities such as pyjama days, crazy hair days, feast days and non-uniform days.

Other issues included less arduous syllabi, better use of technology as a learning tool, increased parental involvement, more guest speakers, additional lessons in the creative arts and foreign language awareness and a better quality school life, including ACs in classes and better sporting facilities.
