Charlotte Wingfield made her first appearance in the World Athletics Championships today when she took part in the women's 100 metres.

The Maltese sprinter was drawn in heat two alongside Olympic champion Elaine Thompson.

Running in wet conditions, Wingfield sped home in a time of 11.82 seconds which was 0.28 seconds slower than her own national best of 11.54 she set at the National Championships at Marsa this year.

Thompson stormed home first in an impressive time of 11.05, ahead of Canada's Crystal Emmanuel (11.14) and Ariana Washington, of the US, who clocked 11.28.

Wingfield finished in eighth place.
