PN leadership hopeful Alex Perici Calascione this morning highlighted the importance of structure within the party that ensured the people were at the heart of its politics.

Addressing a press conference outside parliament, Dr Perici Calascione said that while the party had always put the people at the centre of its politics reforms needed to be introduced to further strengthen internal structures.

“Members of sectional committees as well as district ones need to once again have a political role to serve as the link between the PN and society. It is in this way that the PN can be more aware of what is going on in society and propose necessary changes,” the lawyer said.

He said that this would enable the party to operate in a way that works from bottom to top, with ideas and opinions coming mainly from activists and committee members.

The leadership hopeful also said he believed that the reforms should also include changes to the main roles within the party.

“The role of secretary general should continue to be a central one with the person in the position focusing directly on the party’s work and needs,” Dr Perici Calascione said, adding that he believe it was high time that the role of assistant secretary general is abolished. Instead a number of directors for the party’s various entities including its information office, Elcom, local councils, sectional committee and logistics and activities. This would also include AZAD, the party’s foundation aimed at educating and raising awareness on political issues.
