I fully concur with what Austin Sammut and others wrote about Nationalist MP Edwin Vassallo.

Some are described as ‘soldiers of steel’ even though they might have been given a suspended jail term. There are others who really deserve the description. Vassallo, who acted according to what his informed conscience dictated and voted against gay marriage, is one of them.

He stood up to be counted even though he had the whole parliamentary group against him. It was not done out of spite but because Vassallo is a courageous man, with strong moral values and sound principles.

There has been a lot of talk about the law in question. In fact, for reasons yet unknown, it was the first law the Labour government hurriedly passed through Parliament so soon after the election. Some said it was because Equality Minister Helena Dalli was aiming to be elected Labour deputy leader and wanted some good publicity. The result? She was let down.

The gay marriage law is not a matter of political opinion but of principle. As it is, it goes completely against natural law and against the institutional marriage between a man and a woman. God created them man and woman by which union children are born. A union between two men cannot bear children. Likewise, a union between two women. A union between gays cannot be called a marriage.

This law was simply a matter of vote-catching and nothing else. Many are very disappointed with our MPs.
