Tourism zones will be getting town managers to coordinate cleaning, upkeep and flag enforcement issues.

Paceville will be the first zone to get the enhanced treatment, Tourism Minister Konrad Mizzi said this morning.

Over a 12-month span, tourism town managers will be appointed for individual tourism zones around Malta.

The initiative was announced this morning in a joint press conference with Environment Minister Jose Herrera at Balluta.

Dr Mizzi said over the past five weeks workers from Wasteserv contributed to the upkeep of various beaches and areas in tourism zones under the guidance of the Malta Tourism Authority.

Dr Mizzi said the plan is to have an organised structure to focus on individual localities throughout the year.

He added that the town managers will coordinate with locality mayors, the district police and other stakeholders.

Council budgets will not be touched, he insisted, since the initiative is an add-on to their existing work.

Dr Mizzi said that after the enforcement action on beaches in Armier and Qawra, the MTA reported greater compliance from errant operators.

"We have witnessed instances of operators falling in line as a result of the actions we took," he said.
