The Nationalist Party said today it will be supporting a Bill tackling corruption in sport which is expected to be moved in Parliament after the summer recess.

Earlier this week, Nationalist MPs David Agius and Jason Azzopardi wrote to Anti-Corruption and Transparency Experts’ Task Force chairman Norman Darmanin Demajo to inform him the PN had approved the draft law.

The Bill, which was prepared by the task force, proposes five-year jail terms for athletes and club officials found guilty of sports corruption.

The proposed penalties, which include a hefty fine running into thousands of euros, are harsher than those envisaged in the existing laws.
