Tourist numbers were up by almost 20 per cent this June when compared to the same month last year, new figures released today show. 

A total of 232,193 people visited Malta that month, a 19.4 per cent increase when compared to June 2016.  Visitors collectively spent nearly 1.6 million nights in Malta (a 9.6 per cent increase) and spent €193.7 million, an increase of 14.3 per cent over the same month last year. 

The vast majority of those visitors - 189,687 - came on holiday, but National Statistic Office figures also showed that the number of business trip visitors jumped by 47.9 per cent to reach 21,015. 

Tourist numbers from other EU member states were up by 16.1 per cent. The majority of tourists were aged between 25 and 44, followed by those in the 45-64 age bracket. 

January - June

The first half of 2017 saw a 19.3 per cent increase in tourist trips, with total nights up by 11.6 per cent and expenditure up by 14.8 per cent to reach €753.7 million. On average, visitors spent €761 each while in Malta - a 3.8 per cent decrease when compared to the same period in 2016.
