The Institute of Maltese Journalists has condemned an attack on two Union Press journalists which happened yesterday in Buġibba.

In a statement, the IĠM called on authorities to do everything within the law to bring aggressors to justice and urged any other journalists subjected to violence or threats to report them promptly.

Inewsmalta reported yesterday that two of its staff members, a journalist and photographer, were assaulted by a "group of Maltese people" who also smashed various personal items of theirs.

The attack happened in a public place while the two men were carrying out their work and was reported to police, the media house said.

Earlier today, the GWU also condemned the attack and expressed disgust that "there still exist people who try and win an argument by resorting to physical violence."

The union expressed solidarity with the two and urged police to throw the book at aggressors "who are still caught up in the intolerant and violent attitudes of the past."
