An emotionally-charged plea by two students from Maria Regina College Secondary School, Mosta, to save water in the Maltese islands placed second in the international Young Environment Reporters (YRE) competition in Denmark. The Maltese entry competed against entries from 33 countries.

The entry, submitted by YRE reporters Jessica Schembri and Samira Axia, consisted of a report entitled ‘Water in the Maltese islands: Every drop counts’. It was based on a water conservation project undertaken at the students’ school, which was financed by the HSBC water programme Catch the Drop.

Other Maltese entries were a report by Emma Degabriele from San Anton School, entitled ‘Drying up our future?’, and a video on Malta’s grey water system.

YRE is an international programme run by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) that encourages students to conduct journalistic investigations on environmental issues and disseminate the information via articles, photos and video clips through school websites, blogs, the media and social media.

The competition entries are coordinated by Nature Trust Malta. It has been supported by the HSBC water programme since 2014.
