Malta's schizophrenic construction frenzy may prove to be unsustainable and may lead to an economic collapse, the Democratic Party has warned.

Precious public land is being traded in such a way that the public gets a pittance while big businesses were making pots of gold, PD told a news conference this morning.

"Environmental, social, cultural and infrastructural impacts are invariably played down or ignored completely when such huge projects are undertaken," the party said.

Partit Demokratiku urged the government to stop using public land for private speculation.

It called on the Planning Authority to stop acting like a "big bully" on the Environment and Resources Authority and urged the government to provide the ERA with veto rights.

It also called for environmental, social and transport assessments to be resubmitted for the new Smart City project, which is turning into a real estate project, and urged the Superintendent of Cultural Heritage to safeguard the environmental and architectural of Fort Ricasoli and St Rocco.

"Partit Demokratiku reiterates that the development planning in the country is taking place according to the whims of the selected investors and developers and not according to a properly studied and validated national master plan that ensures all round sustainable development."
