The Nationalist Party has agreed to contribute to talks leading to local council reform.

PN MP Robert Cutajar accepted the government's invitation to take part in the consultation process on the Opposition's behalf in a meeting with parliamentary secretary Silvio Parnis, the PN said in a statement.

"It is only natural that as the party which gave birth to and grew local councils, we feel an obligation and duty to continue playing our part," the PN said in a statement.

Taking part in the process would help ensure that reform also reflected the Opposition's thoughts, the party added.

The Labour Party's electoral manifesto pledged to breathe "new life" into local councils and included proposals such as allowing 16-year-olds to contest local council elections, exploring the possibility of full-time mayors who can serve for a maximum of three terms and looking into options leading to online voting for local council elections.

Apart from meeting Mr Parnis, Mr Cutajar, who served as a local councillor, deputy mayor and mayor for Mellieħa, also met with local councils director Adrian Mifsud and with the Association of Local Councils.
