The Talking Point titled ‘A great week for politics’ (July 21) left a very bitter taste and I’m sure that’s the case with most readers.

It seems very clearly to me that when Kurt Farrugia decided to write his piece, lambasting Simon Busuttil from all angles, he forgot he is the head of government communications and not a diehard party man which his harsh and very offensive words can only be attributed to.

Somewhat arrogantly, he tries to convince us that he’s got bundles of experience behind his back to label Busuttil a failed politician and someone who deserves no praise.

Back in 2003 it was a very young Busuttil who played an influential role in convincing the majority of the Maltese people that the best way forward for the country was European Union accession.

“No one will shed tears for Busuttil’s departure” and “the country will be relieved to see Busuttil’s back”, Farrugia wrote in his character- assassination bid.

Personally, I will be missing Busuttil if he decides to call it quits altogether and also leave Parliament.

It has been almost two months now since the general election but most analysts are still comingup with their theories as to why the Nationalist Party lost with such a huge margin. I do think the PN should consider making crucial changes, as mentioned in the said analysis.

Among the common people, the feeling is that Busuttil mainly failed to lead the PN to victory on June 3 is that, though very knowledgeable, he is a very honest person. There is very little space for politicians of Busuttil’s qualities in today’s society, so characterised by contradiction and opportunistic behaviour, they contend.

So, no, it was not a great week for politics in Malta. It really hurts seeing hard-working politicians like Busuttil leaving without their good service to the people and the country being duly acknowledged.
