Malta International Airport is expecting 5.8 million passenger movements by the end of the year, a record increase of 16 per cent over 2016.

Financial forecasts for 2017 presented this afternoon show the company generating revenues of €79 million with an expected net profit of €23 million.

MIA CEO Alan Borg said the government would be expected to receive €16 million in taxes and dividends from the airport’s operations.

Mr Borg said the company would have invested €16 million in terminal and airfield improvements this year. He was presenting the company’s half yearly results.

Ryanair was confirmed as the number one carrier ferrying passengers to and from Malta, registering an increase of 37 per cent in the first six months. The Irish low cost carrier was responsible for more than one million passenger movements.

It was followed by Air Malta, which registered a three per cent increase in passengers carried.

Mr Borg said low cost carriers were responsible for 52 per cent of passenger traffic passing through the airport.

He said tourist source markets all registered double digit growth in the first six months, with fly-and-cruise passengers contributing to a 10 per cent increase from the UK market alone.
