I refer to the news item ‘Trainee fireman who fell down shaft loses €40,000 in compensation’ (July 19).

I am no legal scholar to go into the merits of the court decision on the matter of an award due to an accident. However, I suggest that an open shaft, used for training in fire-fighting, should have been harnessed with a safety net so if there is a fall the impact would not lead to consequences.
