A video of a reckless driver risking a motorcyclist's life by undertaking on the hard shoulder has prompted a storm of condemnation on social media. 

The brief video shows a motorcyclist driving along the inside lane of Triq Mikiel Anton Vassalli when a Toyota Aygo suddenly appears on their left-hand side and squeezes past. 

As the motorcyclist honks his horn in shock and anger, the car driver speeds on - only to find himself caught behind another car just a few metres away. 

Malta's highway code states that drives should overtake on the right and specifically instructs drivers not to cut sharply in front of the vehicle they have overtaken. 

"Something drastic has to change regarding the lack of law enforcement on our roads, and fast!" wrote a Times of Malta reader who expressed outrage at the reckless manoeuvre. 

The video, first uploaded to Facebook group Selfish Drivers - Malta has been viewed thousands of times and garnered hundreds of comments from angry commuters. 

Times of Malta has forwarded a copy of the footage to the police.
