Updated 5.16pm - Added government statement

The number of persons registering for work in June was down by 941 compared to the same month last year, according to official figures.

The number of unemployed stood at 2,432 compared to 3,441 in the corresponding month last year, the National Statistics Office said.

All age groups except those of under 20 registered decreases. When compared to June 2016, registrants for work decreased irrespective of how long they had been
registering.

The largest decrease was recorded among persons who had been registering for less than 21 weeks. The number of persons with a disability who were registering for work also decreased by 83 to 270.

The largest share of males and females on the unemployment register sought a job as clerical support workers with 20.2 per cent and 38.6 per cent respectively.

Six people find a job every two days - government

In a statement, the government highlighted its successes in bringing unemployment down to record levels.

It noted that the 2,432 unemployment level was the lowest ever recorded in the country and 4,918 lower than it was in March 2013.

This meant that since the change of government, six people had found work every two days, the government said.

"By contrast, over the previous five years, every two days one person would be added to the unemployment register," the statement said.

Numbers of Gozitans, youths, disabled people and socially vulnerable people seeking work were all down, the government added.
