Updated 7.53pm - Added joint statement

Bathers arriving at Armier beach yesterday remained incredulous as they saw a number of gazebo tents erected on the sand.

The structures literally occupied a good part of the popular beach, and some of the owners camped overnight, bathers told Times of Malta.

One bather said she had called the Malta Tourism Authority to take action, only to be told she should redirect her complaint to the Lands Authority.

"The selfishness of people has no limits. They're obviously encouraged by the fact that there's no enforcement in this country," she said.

At least five tents were erected just hours after five truckloads of illegally-placed deckchairs and umbrellas were removed from Armier and Little Armier Bay.

In the statement, the MTA and Lands Authority had said the joint action is part of the ongoing drive aimed at ensuring that regulations are respected in full.

Authorities urge respect

In a joint statement issued in the evening, the MTA and Lands Authority said that tents, gazebos, sun-shaders and other such structures had to be placed towards the back of beaches "to minimise obstruction".

The two authorities said they will be putting up information boards at various beaches including Armier and Little Armier. Aside from noting rules concerning tents, the boards will also highlight regulations about the use of boats and paddle boats, fishing inside swimming zones, presence of pets, littering and loud music at beaches.

"The two authorities recommend that everyone use their better judgement and be respectful towards others so that we can all enjoy Malta and Gozo’s beaches in the best way possible," the statement ended.
