As far back as 2012, some smartphones gave users the possibility to unlock their phone through facial recognition. The problem was that since 2D cameras were used, it was possible to unlock a phone using a photograph rather than the actual face. Mobile companies are now racing to include 3D cameras and technology into the next generation of smartphones. This will provide added security since the hardware and software will also consider the depth perspective.
