A group of Maltese youths from the University of Malta recently attended an intensive 10-day summer school on science communication and public engagement called Steam, held in Marathon, Greece.

The 52 participants from Malta, various European countries as well as Brazil, Nigeria, America and South Korea ranged from PhD students to undergraduate students and from teachers to entrepreneurs.

They trained on the different media that can be used to communicate research in combination with the arts. The participants wrote scripts, directed and performed in science plays, created props and organised public relations.

Some participants also prepared a three-minute talk on a science topic while others organised and performed a science and comedy night.

The school was led by the University of Malta and jointly organised together with Science View from Greece, the University of Edinburgh, Rhine Waal University in Germany and Oysha in Finland.

This project enjoys the support of the European Commission and the school was funded by the EU’s Erasmus Plus programme.
