Enemalta is embarking on another phase of its €1.6 million project to replace the old overhead high voltage lines that supply electricity to Gozo.

Through this project, which started earlier this year, the company will be removing the longest remaining stretch of high voltage 33 kV aerial lines in Malta, between Mellieħa and Armier.

They are being replaced by 10 kilometres of new underground cables, to improve the reliability and flexibility of this connection supplying electricity to the northernmost part of Malta and Gozo.

Trenching works to lay 10 kilometres of new high voltage underground cables started before summer, at other parts of Mellieħa. Next week, the cable laying works will continue along parts of Triq Louis Wettinger, also known as the Mellieħa Bypass.

Vehicular access from Mellieħa towards Għadira and Ċirkewwa will not be affected. Cars driving up from Għadira towards Mellieħa will be diverted to Triq il-Modd, and then back to Triq Louis Wettinger. Road signs will be posted along the route to guide drivers through this temporary diversion.

Works will be interrupted during the Santa Marija week in August and during the Mellieħa village feast in the beginning of September. During these periods, all carriageways of Triq Louis Wettinger will be open to vehicular traffic without any closures or diversions.

The road works are being coordinated under the guidance and with the authorisation of Transport Malta. This phase of the project will be completed in September.
