A years-old Facebook post asking people to donate blood to save a baby girl is going viral after resurfacing on social media feeds.
The post urges people with B- (negative) blood to get in touch with Puttinu Cares, adding that an eight-month old child is in urgent need of blood to save her life.
But according to Puttinu Cares CEO and co-founder Rennie Zerafa, the post dates back years and the organisation has not launched any emergency appeal for blood.
"We've been inundated with phone calls, at least 50 people have called so far and my phone won't stop ringing," he told Times of Malta.
"It's wonderful to see such a response, even if in this case it's not needed," he added.
Facebook prompts users to share posts they had uploaded on that day years ago, as part of its 'memories' feature. In this case, it appears an overzealous social media user went ahead and shared the old post when prompted, with the post quickly spreading.
The misleading Facebook post comes just days after St John's Ambulance were forced to issue a denial that they had warned people not to swim at various beaches across Malta, after a post claiming to be from the organisation spread like wildfire across Facebook.
