New Roma head coach Eusebio Di Francesco has returned to his former club Sassuolo to sign French forward Gregoire Defrel.

The 26-year-old moves to the Stadio Olimpico on an initial loan deal for a fee of five million euros, with an obligation to make the transfer permanent for 15m euros if certain sporting targets are met.

Defrel, who scored 23 goals in all competitions across his two seasons with Sassuolo, told asroma.com: “It means a lot to me to be able to play for Roma.

“I’m going to be part of a very strong group, one of the best teams in Italy. I’m delighted to be here and I will give my all for the team.”

The Paris-born striker graduated from Parma’s academy before spending time with Foggia and Cesena ahead of his move to Sassuolo in August 2015.
